It's a noun. It's a hat the students wear for the graduation ceremony in the UK and in the USA.


The pupil's message is "I didn't do my homework / I didn't hand my homework in".
He compliments his teacher because he hopes the teacher doesn't punish him.

In the USA or the UK, the pupils bring a lunchbox to school.
